I know what you’re thinking because I was the same – “how on earth does it manage to cook great tasting chips without the fat?” Well, it basically uses rapid air technology to fry your foods and actually makes the cleaning job afterwards a lot easier! It will also stop your house from smelling like a chip shop. Don’t worry too much about the technical side of things as you will soon see for yourself when you start dropping dress sizes.

Of course it doesn’t just fry chips, you can fry up pretty much anything you usually would. You can even make your own healthier version of KFC chicken – which might even end up tasting much nicer!  The Airfryer comes with a nice little recipe book which I’m still in the process of going through. I definitely recommend checking it out as it will really help you get the most out of it.

The Phillips Airfryer has a nice sleek black design and fits in well in my kitchen. At first glance it looked like a very complicated piece of machinery but once you start using it you soon realize it is actually quite simple to use. There are 2 dials on the Airfyer, one is for temperature and one is for time. There is also a nice little grill compartment which tucks away inside the Airfryer when not in use. To get the grill pan out of the base of the grill you simply push down on the little button next to the handle. After that just pop in your pre-cut potatoes with half a tablespoon of oil, stick them in the fryer for around 16 minutes and wait. Once the nifty little bell sounds, take your chips out of the Airfryer and marvel at how deliciously golden brown they look!

There is even a divider which comes with the Airfryer that slots in the middle of the removable tray and allows you to cook 2 separate foods at once. This is particularly useful when cooking tasty chicken and chips!

I definitely recommend the Phillips Airfryer if you have kids as it allows you to rest easy knowing they aren’t clogging their arteries up with saturated fats. You may even find that they’ll end up preferring your home made chips rather than McDonalds and other fast food giants – ultimately saving you money in the long run!

So overall the Phillips Airfryer is fantastic! It allows you to cook delicious foods the healthy way, it is safe and easy to use and it is very easy to clean. Since purchasing it I have never experienced any problems with it and will continue to use it for as long as taste buds crave chips!

I find it is always way too hot for me to enjoy and so I am forced to either remove the lid and hope it doesn’t get too cold or wait and wait until my coffee is at the perfect temperature. You would think by now that popular coffee shops such as Starbucks would have picked up on this and adapted to some sort of method that makes their coffee drinkable immediately.

Following this coffee dilemma which I am sure most of you are familiar with, I decided to purchase one of these nifty little Brugo Mugs and to be honest I have to say it really lives up to its promises! It will in fact make piping hot coffee, chocolate or tea, drinkable immediately after pouring it into the Brugo mug. How on earth does it manage to do this? Well if you look on top of the mug you will notice that you are given three options, one of which is ‘tip and cool’. After selecting the ‘tip and cool’ feature you simply tip the mug as if you were to have a sip from it, the temperature control chamber then comes into action and hey presto, you are drinking coffee at a humanly possible temperature!

I can definitely recommend the Brugo Mug to anyone who has small children as the ‘lock’ feature found on the lid will give you complete peace of mind – so in worst case scenario a child happens to knock the mug over, they will be completely safe  and free of harm from the steaming hot coffee.

The Brugo Mug can also be doubled up as a basic flask using just the ‘sip’ feature which I can safely say works like a charm without any hitches. I actually work nights and I really rely on fuelling myself with as much caffeine as possible to make it through my shifts in one piece. However, the coffee machines at work are useless and serve what has to be just a cup of the cheapest coffee around. So out comes my snazzy little Brugo Mug which has been an absolute life saver and allowed me to mix my own blend at home and take it to work whilst staying at a very toasty temperature! Unlike some other flasks which I have had in the past, the Brugo Mug is safe in your bag and won’t leak all over the place.

It is no ordinary looking mug either, you can choose from a range of colours. Green, red, blue, yellow, pretty much any colour of the rainbow is available – I personally chose the navy blue coloured mug.

While cooking for yourself, you will want to embrace the concept of the one-dish meal. This is a totally complete meal including vegetables, carbohydrate, and protein which can all be cooked together in one dish. These types of dishes are incredibly easy to make, and they are just right for one person because you can adjust the quantities for just one serving, or store them easily as leftovers. Examples of this type of dish include chillies, pastas, casseroles, rice dishes and more.

Another tip is to buy cheap and simple ingredients which are versatile and can be used in more than one dish, such as mushrooms, green peppers, and tomato paste, which could be used in a curry, a chilli, a spaghetti Bolognese and more. Once you have found a great deal on these basic ingredients, it’s what you do with the sauces and what you serve them with which makes them interesting.

Here are a few ideas for cheap meals which are well suited to one person living on their own:

Ratatouille

You might have heard of this hearty French dish from the Pixar film starring a rat who dreams of being a chef. It is a traditional French Provencal stewed vegetable dish, which is incredibly delicious and filling. It is a great dish to cook in the autumn, because the many vegetables you will need will be cheap and plentiful. There is no one specific recipe for Ratatouille, so once you have the basics of tomatoes, garlic, onions, courgettes, aubergine, peppers and carrot, and a few herbs such as basil, bay leaf and thyme, the rest is up to you. You can save money by including vegetables which are on sale and in season, or by growing your own. Saute the veggies together and then layer in a casserole dish and bake in the oven. Ratatouille can be served as a meal on its own, and accompanied by pasta, rice or bread.

Chili Con Carne

This spicy stew will wake up your tastebuds, and isn’t expensive to make. One of the main ingredients in a chilli con carne is beans, which are notoriously cheap. They are also a very good source of protein. There are many different ways to make chilli con carne, but most include beans, vegetables such as pepper and carrots, and ground beef (unless you are making a vegetarian version). Chili can be served with rice, bread, or even over potatoes (which can be very cheap to buy). Add some chilli powder and spicy barbeque sauce to give it as much of a “kick” as you would like, and enjoy!

Create Your Own Pasta

When it comes to cooking pasta, the bare essentials are the pasta itself, some style of sauce, and then the extras you mix in. There are no rules and since you live on your own you can simply cook something that tastes good to you! There are virtually thousands of different combinations you can create, and so if you are looking for a cheap but delicious and filling meal here is what you do: choose the cheapest shapes of pasta on sale at your supermarket, whether it is linguine or spirals. Next, select a sauce to go with it, again choosing whichever is the cheapest. Now choose a type of meat if you like (sausages are usually a very cheap option) and last but not least select some appropriate vegetables which are on sale such as peppers or mushrooms. Now, combine your purchases and create a totally unique pasta dish of your own!

The great thing about this is that next time you go to the supermarket, different options will be on sale and you will get to experiment with a wide range of pasta combinations, from creamy fettuccine alfredo with mushrooms one day to spicy chicken penne arrabiata with red peppers the next.

Well the reality is that while there is no hard and fast rules as to what constitutes ‘fresh’ the general consensus is that it simply means it hasn’t been frozen.

Supermarket fish can lie on ice for over two weeks before it reaches the shelves yet since it has not technically been frozen, it can still be labelled as fresh.

In addition, vegetables such as broccoli or asparagus imported from the far shores of South America and Africa can be up to ten days old before they are available for us to buy. Central American bananas arrive on our shores within around eleven days; yet to ensure their freshness they are picked prematurely and are still green when they get to the UK – they are then treated with ethylene gas which artificially ripens them. Apples and potatoes can easily be six months old.

The primary issue with this is that fresh produce starts losing its nutritional content from the moment it’s picked. With this in mind, how many nutrients can a six month old apple actually contain? Will a banana that’s taken from its tree before it’s ready have had time to develop its full nutritional density?

So what can we do to ensure that the food we eat is rich in the nutrients we presume it to be?

Buying frozen food is in fact, much healthier than many people believe. Most fruits and vegetables are frozen within hours of harvesting, meaning that they have lost very little of their nutritional content. The freezing process retains much of the remaining nutrients making frozen produce often much healthier than ‘fresh’.

Alternatively, we can grow our own food, or buy food from local farms where it will have been picked within a few days, or even that same day.

If you wish to grow your own food there are a few things you should consider. First and foremost; is your topsoil in optimum condition for growing produce? Topsoil refers to the uppermost layer of the soil upon the earth and it is what contains all the nutrients that plant life needs to grow.

If you have never paid much attention to your garden before, it is highly likely that your topsoil will be in poor condition. In order to rectify this you should clear the soil of any plant debris and weeds and top it up with some fresh, PH balanced topsoil that you can find in most good garden stores.

You should also consider whether or not you really have the time to grow your own food. Although the process does not take up as much time as many people think, it is a lot more time consuming than a quick trip to the shop. The issue is that if you attempt to grow your own food and fail, the initial expense of getting everything set-up will be wasted.

If this may turn out to be the case then do try and visit local farm shops and see what they have on offer. Despite common belief, the food available is often cheaper than that on our supermarket shelves. This is because there is no ‘middle-man’ for the farm to deal with, and by selling it directly at a cheaper cost than the supermarkets they are still able to make a healthy profit.

The Taiwanese are a nation that likes to eat the entire animal, from nose to tail – including the bits you don’t want to think about. In Taipei, you can find pretty much anything put on a stick and barbequed right in front of you in the street. Anyone for pork blood cake? Or what about chicken heads? Not something that you fancy, maybe a nice piece of pig’s cartilage to chew on? Welcome to the wonderful world of xiao chi (small eats) which you can find at the night markets all around Taiwan but especially in Taipei on Guangzhou Street.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, you would be hard pushed to find any dish, served on the street or in a restaurant, that doesn’t contain nuoc mam or mama tom; a brown block of dried and processed shrimp paste. Not only does it not look very appetising it smells horrendous. In fact, during the Vietnamese war the American soldiers apparently nicknamed it “viet cong tear gas” as it was so vile. But the Vietnamese add it to everything, from their national dish Pho to the dipping sauce for their Summer Rolls. The problem for the Western traveller is that shellfish allergies are most common of all allergies and you will struggle to find a dish without dried shrimp paste. Even their paté served in the traditional French baguettes have the addition of nuoc mam.

Chengdu, at the heart of the Sichuan region of China has been named the Unesco City of Gastronomy 2011 but their cuisine should not be taken lightly. The main ingredients are oil, garlic, chilli and Sichuan Pepper – a special spice that is actually a flower head with the ability to numb the mouth. There is one special dish that is a bit of an in-joke, Beef boiled in water.

In Fuchsia Dunlop’s Land of Plenty  she has recreated this dish but has, rather helpfully, given it the slightly more truthful name of “Boiled Beef Slices in a Fiery Sauce”. In her recipe, for two people, she dictates a handful of dried chillies, 2 teaspoons of Sichuan pepper and 2 tablespoons of chilli bean paste. From her introduction “As they say in Sichuan, it’ll make you pour with sweat, even on the coldest day of the year.”

Vegas made its name from gambling but the food revolution began about 15 years ago, with a wave of famous chefs opening restaurants and casinos trying to outdo one another with the high-end dining options. Wolfgang Puck led the way but Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy weren’t far behind, with each opening multiple restaurants in Vegas bearing their names and serving up their signature dishes for visitors from around the world to enjoy. Bobby Flay, Michael Mina, and Mario Batali have all also opened restaurants in Las Vegas to take their spot at the table as well.

One common trend of many of the top Vegas restaurants is a French influence, with Joël Robuchon, Picasso at the Bellagio, Alize, and L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon consistently getting high marks. Synonymous with class and fine dining, French restaurants dot the Vegas dining landscape, with steak houses such as Cut, Craftsteak, and STRIPSTEAK not far behind. Restaurants such as Andre’s and Mix provide a more eclectic flair, drawing on various regions around the world for their menu and ingredients.

Many visitors might think of Vegas as being the home of Texas Holdem Poker instead of five star restaurants, but the city has quietly cemented its place as one of the top destinations for foodies from around the world. It’s also a formula that other areas of the world such as Macau and Singapore are adopting, as far as mega casinos offering far more than just slot machines for guests to enjoy during their stay.

I’m working with Liberation and it’s great that the company is run to benefit the farmers and their families.”

Although its name may suggest otherwise, The London Carriage Works is one of Liverpool’s top places to dine and while the Hope Street-based restaurant specialises in modern international cuisine, most of its ingredients are sourced locally.

Indeed, you’ll find the sea bass is caught from Liverpool Bay while vegetables come from the Claremont Farm on the Wirral.

Run by head chef Paul Askew, The London Carriage Works has won a number of accolades over the years including the Restaurant of Overall Excellence prize at the 2010 Liverpool Food and Drink Festival Awards. It also received two AA rosettes in the same year.

Named in honour of the coach and carriage company that occupied the same building in the late 19th century – a title which was discovered engraved in stonework during renovation work – here you’ll be able to sample Barnston Longhorn beef and smoked haddock risotto.

As well as dinner, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea and is just a short distance from the Hope Street Hotel. If you’re travelling to the restaurant by car enter L1 9DA into your sat-nav.

Also situated on Hope Street is the 60 Restaurant and Bistro. However, this has a different postcode to the London Carriage Works (L1 9BZ) so bear this in mind if you’re travelling by car and relying on your sat-nav system to guide you.

Situated in a historic Georgian townhouse, the restaurant has specialised in seasonal British cuisine since its launch in 1998. You’ll find roast Cumbrian lamb and fillet of Irish cod among the dishes on offer, while the deep-fried jam sandwich on the dessert menu is sure to satisfy your sweet-tooth.

A number of events are held at the bistro, including wine tasting sessions and a regular Supper Club, hosted by a special guest with head chef Damien Flynn personally creating a unique menu for diners.

Eating at The Monro restaurant on Duke Street (L1 5AG), meanwhile, gives you the chance to sample some fantastic English cooking, with a unique Mediterranean twist.

Grilled chicken breast stuffed with chorizo and sunblush tomatoes and sea bass served with tiger prawn and spring onion noodles are among the items on the menu.

A choice of real ales can be sampled here and while the selection changes on a regular basis you can be sure the beer is of the highest quality. Among the drinks previously served is Jennings Snecklifter, which received a prize at the 2005 Brewery Industry International Awards ceremony in Munich.

For a taste of Latin America in Merseyside, visit Alma de Cuba. This restaurant is housed in what was once St Peter’s Catholic Church and today serves international cuisine that draws influences from Cuba, South America and the Caribbean.

You can dine a la carte or go for one of the set menus, which start from £27.95 per person, with a wide selection of cocktails and spirits available to accompany whatever you eat.

In addition to serving food, the restaurant holds weekly salsa dancing classes, while there is also live music on Thursday evenings. And each Sunday the establishment acknowledges its past life as a church by holding a brunch with a gospel choir performing.

The Harlem Globetrotters and indie band The Holloways are among the famous names to have appeared at Alma de Cuba, so if you want to see who you can spot there put L1 4BH into your sat-nav and head on down.

Clean food production means that the production method doesn’t harm the environment, is ethical in its treatment of livestock and, indeed the farmers who produce the food we consume, no matter where in the world they are. This also includes the fair, accessible prices for consumers and fair prices, wages and conditions provided to small-scale producers.

As a local member you’ll join your nearest convivia who work to promote and protect the food culture and encourage a more sustainable future for food production. 1. Insects

In Thailand, people consider mealworms, grasshoppers, longicorn larvae, scorpions and waterbugs important food staples in their daily meals. The insects have prepared with various spices and are roasted or fried. During a visit to Khon Kaen, Thailand, by an agricultural entomologist research service, scientists were treated to several popular local dishes. One entomologist, Dr. Bill White, indicated that the longicorn larvae tasted a lot like pecans. Longicorn larvae are close to 3 inches long and may be consumed just like oysters.

2. Mammoths

In 2009, a 31,000 cooking pot was discovered in an archaeological site within the Czech Republic. The pot contained animal parts from 2 Mammoths along with other animals. Paleontologist Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan believed that Americans from 10,000 years ago stored their animal meat in frozen lakes just as we use refrigerators today. This idea was tested using a dead horse that died from natural causes. Nearly 170 pounds of horse meat was anchored into a local pond. About every week, Fisher pulled up some of the meat and cooked it for a meal until summer began – showing that frozen mammoth was probably on the menu in ancient times.

3. Mopane Worms

Mopane worms are big caterpillars and are the main product sold by the multimillion dollar Rand trading company. Rand operates in Botswana, Mpumalanga, Zimbabwe and the Limpopo Province. Mopane worms provide a vital source of protein for the local area. In Johannesburg, the Gramadoelas restaurant offers mopane worms on their menu. However, the supply is in danger because of over-harvesting – mopane worms have become rare or even extinct in some places where they used to be common. Scientists are studying these worms to learn how they can be grown and harvested at an sustainable level.

4. Goat Meat

In tough terrain, many people raise goats for their meat. Goats produce tasty milk which may be made into delicious cheese. The wild type of goat meat is usually tough and needs to be slow cooked in a stew. In addition, goats are popular to raise on North American farms, especially where Caribbeans reside. Curried goat meat is a common dish served by specialized restaurants within big cities.

5. Snails

One of the favorite foods of rich Romans was escargot (snails). It was so popular that snails were raised on farms specifically designed for breeding. Snails were introduced to the French when Caesar entered the Gaul region. Today, snails are considered the land based version of clams and oysters. The Champagne and Burgundy Vineyard snails are famous worldwide for their fine taste.

And while beer has become more complicated in construction and flavor over the years, the pairings of this refreshing beverage with basic pizza flavors deserves some analysis.

Basic Beer Types

There are two main types of beer, lagers and ales. A kind of beer fits into one category or the other depending on yeast and temperature during fermentation.

Lagers

• Pilsner – pale in color, but a more bitter flavor.
• Pale – a beer light in color, body and taste (includes cheap beer found in grocery stores that I would never drink in a million      years).
• Light – these include low-calorie beers by using less hops and barley, but can also indicate beer that is light in color and      body.
• Dark – Voluptuous beer with rich flavor and dark in color, made with roasted hops and barley.

Ales

• Brown – a mild choice, this copper-colored beer is great with a wide variety of food pairings.
• Porter – Dark, rich and flavorful, some of these can taste of chocolate.
• Stout – Similar to a porter, this kind of beer is dark and thick.

Don’t be fooled by the simple descriptions. Like wine, beer has its own unique combinations and intensities of flavor. Words used to describe it include hoppy, sweet, wheaty, stout, heavy, dark, bitter, smoky and sour. Other flavors include pumpkin, fruits like raspberry and orange, chocolate, and even vegetables.

Avoid Cheap Beer

A friend of mine believes that if you can read through it, then you probably shouldn’t drink it. For me, the old adage “you get what you pay for” rings true more often than not when it comes to quality beer. If there’s a large quantity in a giant case that costs $10, run away and don’t drink it!

Since I’m from the Pacific Northwest, there are several microbreweries within driving distance. Microbreweries are small, independent companies that use local ingredients to create beer works of art! Brewed in smaller batches, the beer takes on the special flavors of the community.

In order to find a really good beer for your favorite neighborhood pizza, research any local microbreweries that you can support while finding the perfect pairing. If you don’t have any microbreweries close to you, try any specialty beers from your state or from neighboring states. These beers will cost a bit more out of your pocket, but your palate will be forever grateful.

Balancing Heavy and Light Flavors

The idea of pairing specific beers with my favorite food occurred to me over a pot of cheese fondue. For me, Widmer Hefeweizen has to be part of the bread-dipping extravaganza that I associate with this – one of my favorite – foods.

And since one of the main ingredients for pizza is cheese, it also ranks on my list of favorites. Pizza and beer have been paired together basically since time began. However, like the basic beer descriptions above, tasty combinations can be more complicated than they first appear.

In order to match beer and pizza appropriately, it’s important to start with really good pizza – my preference is BJ Willy’s woodfired pizza, a restaurant in West Linn, Oregon – a high-quality pizza enhances the flavor of the beer. Based on my experience, I recommend starting with these:

• Pair a meatball or meatcentric pizza with something red – You might want to can try a lighter beer, but the flavors in pale ales can clash with those in the pizza. It’s better to go with a brown ale with a meat-heavy pizza.

• Try a veggie pizza with a beer that has a darker, slightly roasted flavor to bring out the fullness of the roasted veggies and to balance the lightness of the pizza.

• Basic margherita pizza requires something that blends well with citrus, like Blue Moon or Hefeweizen.

• A pizza with caramelized onion or pineapple would go well with a porter or stout, depending on how rich you want to go.

The next time you’re headed out for pizza and beer, make the most of your meal with a really good pairing.

Steak is one meat that has a wide range of cuts. Traditionally it has been served with a red wine that is rich and hearty with strong flavor. The objective was to serve an expensive cut with an equally impressive wine. The wine must complement the steak and neither should overpower the flavor of the other. If you are serving steak, a bold red wine would not be a bad choice.

One of the best wines to pair with steak is a Pinot Noir. If you like rare steak, then this is the most wonderful pairing you can ever imagine.  It would seem that it might be a tad sweet but when the meat is cooked rare it is a perfect match. However, you can also take a bit more time and factor in the cut you are serving to optimize pairings.

If it is a flank cut, which tends to lean more toward flavor in lieu of tenderness, serving an even stronger red wine is preferable. These would be your London broils and Rib Eyes.  Cuts like filet mignon would do well pair with a young Claret or Pinot Noir. The Claret is best in this pairing if it has not yet developed the smoky flavor that comes with aging.er

Now if the cut is being served with a sauce, the choices may have to be slightly different. For instance a barbeque sauce will drastically change the flavor of the beef. Serving a Chianti would be a better choice. This is a wine that goes well with tomato sauces. If the steak is served with a piquant sauce or has been marinated, a wine that has spicy undertones will be a great choice. This is where you would serve a chilled Zinfandel or one of the full bodied reds. If the sauce is creamy or , serve a Chardonnay.As you can see, the sauce, or the  lack of sauce, can really be an important factor when choosing wine to pair with a steak.

In business, there is an age old rule called the 80/20 rule.  It states that 80% of ones profits come from 20% of the customers.  The same goes for a great steak dinner.  80% of the “Wow” comes from 20% of the meal.  And most of that, as every wine lover knows, is the wine that is served with the steak.  So eat well, drink well, and make sure you do both in perfect harmony.

It’s in the Grape Skins

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chianti are popular types of red wine. A red wine differs from a white, most obviously because of its color, which relates directly to the color of the grape’s skin. Grapes with red or purple skins are pressed and often the skins soak in the juice to produce a red colored wine. This contact with the grape skins may be what gives red wine its heart healthy properties.

Resveratrol

Produced naturally by plants and found in red grape skins and seeds, high levels of Resveratrol exist in red wines. Studies show Resveratrol has anti-inflammatory and blood sugar lowering benefits as well as increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and prevention of blood clots. Flavonoids found in red wine also act as antioxidants by slowing down the deterioration of cells and help prevent the formation of plaque in the arteries.

Heart Health

Consuming moderate amounts of red wine, about two or three glasses per day, may help to keep your heart healthy and protect against cardiovascular disease. Studies are showing that a daily glass of red wine may lower the risk of heart attack by 30 to 50 percent. Drinking red wine may even prevent subsequent heart attacks in people who have survived one previously. There is good news for people watching their cholesterol as well. Some studies show that red wine can help to raise the good cholesterol (HDL) and keep the bad stuff (LDL) from forming at all.

Moderation

While this is certainly great news, don’t go running out to stock up your wine cellar just yet. The key is moderation; in fact, the American Heart Association avoids recommending that non-drinkers to take up the bottle. Simply if you already enjoy a glass or two of wine, simply continue to indulge in moderation and recommend one or two drinks per day for men, one per day for women. It is also helpful to remember that the ADA defines a glass of wine as 4 oz.

The health risks of excessive alcohol consumption, even red wine, outweigh the benefits. More than a few glasses of wine every day could easily cause weight gain and all the health risks associated with being overweight. Studies have also suggested that those who consume alcohol face an increased risk of cancer. Imbibing responsibly is the key to enjoying wine and all the health benefits it may provide.

No matter what the case, there are plenty of things you can do on your date that won’t break the budget. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Rent Tandem Bikes- Going for a bike ride together may sound generic, but not if you do it on a tandem bike. It mixes things up and is a great way to talk and share some laughs.
• Ice Blocking- If you know of a big grass hill then ice blocking is an awesome activity for a date. You can find large ice blocks for just a couple dollars. Then you just need to bring towels to make a cushion for the ice block and you’re good to go.
• How About a Group Date- If you’re working with limited funds you may want to consider inviting a few more couples to join you and your date. By splitting up the costs you can keep expenses to a minimum. Sure it may not be as intimate, but for a first date it can provide a less stressful environment for you to get to know each other.
• Thrift Store Marathon- Take your date to the thrift store and you each get a few dollars to work with. Then you split up and pick out each other’s outfits that they will have to wear for the evening but you can’t go over budget.
• Ice Cream Sculpture- This may be a little messy but it’s a blast to clean up. Go to the store together and get a half gallon of ice cream. Grab what you want to decorate it with, like licorice, M&M’s, Oreos, and chocolate syrup. Then take the ice cream home, and dump all of it out onto a cookie sheet. Use spoons, knives, and any utensils you feel necessary to begin sculpting your very own masterpiece. Take a picture once your finished and then dig in!
• Water Paints- Find you inner artist with this inexpensive date. A basic water paint set won’t cost more than a couple bucks. The key to making this a great is the setting. Find a lake, or a nice view overlooking the city where you can watch the sun go down. Paint what you see and at the end you can exchange paintings as a gift.

When it comes to planning an inexpensive date the possibilities are endless. Planning a date shouldn’t be as complicated as your states probate process. With a little brainstorming you can come up with an idea that will be fun and fit your budget.

Mother set the older kids to licking ourselves silly, filling book after book until mother had the necessary total for a toaster. It took many, many, many trips to the supermarket, but finally that shiny new toaster was ours. (It was of such high quality that the appliance now resides in my sister’s kitchen.)

Mother then started saving up for a blender, but she’d learned the joys of saving with little pieces of papers and soon began clipping manufacturer coupons from the two newspapers delivered to our home, (after Dad had read them, of course). Long before “extreme couponing” became glamorous, our favorite supermarket cashier was complimenting Mother on her thrifty ways. Peering over the top of the counter, I rapidly learned a lesson in economics that has followed me throughout life. Since I saw Mother as super intelligent, coupons must be more than cool; they were smart!

By the time I moved away from home in 1974, newspapers were printing sale inserts that included coupons. I subscribed to our local rag (and indeed it was a rag) just for these circulars. Before long, I was saving entire dollars with grocery coupons from our local Target store. While I didn’t go to extreme lengths, the savings certainly helped put me through college.

The economy had recovered once I landed a good job. Foolishly, I threw caution to the winds and turned my back on clipping. “Coupons are a hassle,” was my erroneous thinking. Besides, I could afford to pay full price for toilet paper so why bother?

Years later I began working as a journalist — not one of the best career choices if one wants to live high on the hog. Fortunately, working at a paper meant I had nearly endless access to coupons. I hopped back onto the clipping lifestyle and learned once again how to live on a starvation salary. I even bought a little organizer to ensure the coupons didn’t get lost in my purse.

I again got out of the habit after moving to France, where I barely understood what I was buying much less how their coupon system worked. I bought most of my food from fresh-air markets, where prices were cheap and saving was easy.

My return to the States coincided with the beginning of the recession. Unemployment forced me back into a super-frugal lifestyle, but this time I wasn’t alone. Other shoppers were handing over piles of coupons at checkout without the slightest shame. Once again, coupons were cool and experience placed me at the head of the line. I soon learned the joys of shopping for nearly everything with coupons, including at thrift stores, the gas station and even farmers’ markets.

While I’ve never gone the extreme-couponing route — needing only one tube of toothpaste at a time — I’m back on the coupon train as I save up for a return to France. Now, however, coupons are everywhere. I can download them from the Internet, load them up onto my King Soopers Value Card, pull them up on my smartphone, and pick them up in neighbors’ recycling bins. It surprises me how many people still don’t shop using coupons, but I’m more surprised by the statistics that say many people have wised up to these money-saving devices. Here’s just a quick overview.

1. 41 percent of coupon fans come from households earning over $700,000 per year.

2. 60 percent of coupon users earn more than $50,000 per year.

3. 367 billion printable coupons were distributed in 2009.

4. The average value of a coupon is $1.44.

5. 2010 saw a 27-percent increase in coupon redemption over 2009.

Clearly, the recession has made frugal chic a hot commodity, with coupons leading the way. Hand to my heart, I promise never to forsake couponing again.

5: The Fat Duck

A near legendary restaurant run by chef Heston Blumenthal, The Fat Duck was named as the best restaurant in the world by Restaurant Magazine. The place won many other accolades, especially in the UK region, and is celebrated for its original and exotic fare. Blumenthal reportedly bases his menu off of principles of molecular gastronomy, a practise involving the awareness of the chemical responses involved in the cooking process. 2009 saw health standard issues, in the most recent case, due to contaminated oysters. This brings their rating from first to fifth.

4: Osteria Francescana

Established in 1995, this restaurant earned two Michelin stars and was voted sixth best in the world by Restaurant Magazine in 2010. It is based in Modena, Italy, and owned as well as run by chef Massimo Bottura. Rumours state that Bottura takes his inspiration from the art world and the décor of this prime establishment seems to support the claim. Their speciality is traditional Italian foods, although this by no means implies that they’re limited only to this vein.

3: Mugaritz

Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz rules the San Sebastián super star’s kitchen with an iron pan, and what he and his expert team come up with everyday has continuously earned the restaurant ultra high rankings. In 2007, Restaurant Magazine voted them into seventh position and the publication elevated them to fourth only a year later. Lovely large portions, home-cooked traditional flavours. I love this place for their tasty deli foods. It’s the only authentic deli in Liverpool. I love the fact that I can eat in the restaurant and then buy ingredients in the deli and make something similar at home.
They offer quite a good range of food, sandwiches, a massive range of sides including chorizo salad, potato salad, chunky chips and chicken liver pate.
You can get a starter, sandwich and side for around £10.00, which is really good value too as you know the foods used in delicatessens are of good quality.
I’d say it was definitely worth a try.

Maharaja is a real gem of a find. It’s one of only a few restaurants of the same cuisine and also offers great value. They do a deal where you can get 4 curries, rice, a pudding and parantha bread for a business lunch.

I hadn’t really eaten much Mexican food before coming here, but it is now a staple of mine to go at least once a month.
The food is spicy yet full of flavour, and their fajitas are gorgeous. I like to have a large bowl of nachos as a starter to share with whoever I’m with as it really makes a nice start to a meal.

Ask for their pecan pie to try for desert, as it has quickly become my favourite pudding. Nutty, sweet and crunchy, it finishes off the meal perfectly. 10/10.

I love Indian food, and as you’d think from the name of this place, the food is full of red chillies. However, they are not used in a way to be too spicy and they give a lovely kick to the food, with lots of flavour.
Try their Bishwantha mix special, which is a mixed grill cooked in a traditional sauce with red chillies. I is divine, and unlike any Indian food I’ve tasted before.

An absolute gem of a restaurant serving gorgeous Italian food. Pizzas, pastas and risottos are all under ten pounds, and all chicken dishes are around that price too, so it’s quite cheap for an Italian.
The food is really high quality and the menu is huge.
My favourite is the penne picante, which is a spicy, fiery pasta dish. As a side order, try the spinach – it is pan fried in butter and is really rich and tasty. I love the food here as it is not too heavy and you don’t come away feeling really full.
Definitely worth a try if you like Italian food.

I love food from the Med at the best of times, but Cyrus does an absolutely lovely job of it. My favourite meal from here is their Tyrokafteri, which is a blend of soft cheeses, hot chilli, vinegar, and olive oil. It is really tangy and refreshing and really gets your taste-buds ready for the main meal. They do a lovely Stifado, a vinegary, rich, red wine infused lamb dish, but try their kokkinisto for a garlicky chicken dish.
Definitely recommended is their baklava for desert, which is sweet, nutty and crunchy. It is absolutely divine.

As well as catering for the congregation, this cafeteria-style operation welcomes students, locals and the fortunate tourist who happens to stumble upon it. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the plates are piled high. Meat-eaters can opt for lamb, chicken or kebabs fired up in the barbecue every day. Vegetarians can go for a couple of combinations including mixed vegetable curry, dahl, chickpea or spinach and potato curry, with freshly baked naan bread also on offer. Wash it all down with a range of exotic juices from mango to sugar cane. Alfresco dining under a plastic roof in all weathers, with disposable plates and cutlery, is not everyone’s cup of tea, and the Mosque Kitchen is certainly not recommended for those who prefer polished service. Here the emphasis is very much on good home-cooked curries at incredibly reasonable prices. Very popular, especially in the summer months, this is definitely the place to go for an authentic filling meal for under a fiver.

Proper home-cooked Greek food. If you’ve never had Stifado before, try it from here. It’s lamb marinaded in red wine, balsamic vinegar and herbs, and is sweet, rich, tangy and meaty all at the same time. It’s one of my favourite Greek meals and the Tavern do not disappoint!

If you’re looking for heaps of hot, spicy, flavoursome, traditional Chinese food, this is the place to come in Bristol. They offer all you can eat during lunchtimes for just £7.95 – and there are some proper traditional Chinese dishes on the menu, not just your average Chinese takeaway menu.

If you look at the Glassboat from outside, it seems really expensive-looking and a bit daunting.
Once you walk in, the staff are really friendly and eager to get you seated and eating, and the whole interior is just amazing. It’s really contemporary and innovative.

If you go here, try the bolgnese. You might think it’s more of the same, really boring, but it is delicious! It’s made of beef, pork shoulder, and wild boar, and the flavours combine absolutely beautifully! It is the best bolognese I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve been to Italy many times.
I suggest trying their limoncello panna cotta for desert, which really cuts through the heavy main course.

If you want heaps of spicy, flavourful Indian food I can definitely recommend Momtaz of Sheffield. Go on a Monday night for a fantastic 6-course all you can eat meal for £6.99. I couldn’t get over the price and the heaps of food you get. We went for a family meal on one of the Monday’s and the value is amazing.
I would recommend trying their prawn shimla, which is prawns in a sort of sweet and sour sauce. It is so tasty!

Hui Wei is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants. The interior is modern, and the place has a good atmosphere. They also offer really good value – main meals starting from £5.00. They also do a lunch menu which is two courses for £7.50, which is brilliant value.
Their spring rolls are absolutely stunning, as are their satay sauces. Definitely give both a try if you go there.
This place can get busy on weekends so if you’re planning to go with a larger party, it’s probably a good idea to book up in advance.

Noodle Inn is one of the best value Chinese restaurants in Sheffield. It is lively, bright, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful.
My favourite dish on the menu has to be a big plate of their fried noodles with BBQ shredded pork. Their food fills you up brilliantly, and is very tasty.
Main meals are priced at around £6.00, so it’s great value too.

This restaurant is a real gem of a find, serving traditional Turkish cuisine. If you’ve never tried Turkish food, this is a real must.
Their servings are huge, and I mean huge. They are rich, full of flavour and not too spicy for those who haven’t tried this type of food before.
One deal they offer is £7.00 for two courses and a drink, which is fantastic value.
I would recommend you try the ‘kunefe’ desert, which is crispy noodles, mozzarella, honey and pistachios. It is really, really delicious.

Piccolino’s is one of my absolute favourite places to eat. They offer very traditional Italian food at reasonable prices.
Their pastas are all made daily, from scratch, and as customers you can watch them making it – just like you are in a traditional Italian kitchen.
Their pastas, calzone, risotto, and insalata are all around the £10.00 mark and the food is wonderful.
A particular favourite of mine is the traditional Caesar salad, which is stunning, and the Caesar dressing really packs a punch.

Akbars is a lovely, modern, restaurant that offers fantastic value.
They offer set dinners from £16.95 if you are looking to go there for a special occasion, but main courses range anywhere from £4.95-£8.50.
A favourite of mine is their Rogan Josh, which is very tasty, not too spicy, and great value.
They also offer a great desert menu which is unusual for Indian restaurants, including traditional Indian deserts such as kulfi, and traditional British deserts like sticky toffee pudding, so there is something to cater to everyone’s tastes.

El Piano caters especially towards people with restricted diets or those that want to eat healthily. Although it may sound like a ‘boring’ veggie café, it actually serves some really good tasting foods.
They offer a fantastic value menu, too, costing just £3.95 for tapas and £5.95 for main courses.
The food is all gluten-free, vegan, and nut-free in many dishes.
I like El Piano because the food is a bit different, yet still really tasty. My personal favourite is the mushroom and basil salad, which is full of flavour.

Silversmiths is a lovely restaurant that serves fantastic food. 100% of produce is local, 70% being based in Sheffield itself. I love restaurants that really use local produce and Silversmiths does it really well.
They are, on the whole, not that much of a ‘Cheap Eat’, but if you go on a Tuesday night, they do a fantastic pie menu that is to die for, for £8.50. Their deserts are gorgeous too, my favourite being the cheesecake. Definitely worth a try.

Popolo’s is a lovely Italian chain restaurant that serves both an extensive bar menu and restaurant menu.
Their pizzas, pastas, and risottos are all around £7.00, which is great value. My favourite is their carbonara, which is delicious. I haven’t tasted any better outside of Italy, which is certainly saying something!
Their desert menu is also quite good, with a large range of puddings and a cheese board with lots of Italian cheeses which I can definitely recommend.

Champs is cheerful, lively, and has a really good vibe. You could spend all day over a pint here very happily.
They serve American-style cuisine, ranging from burgers to wraps to burritos to chilli con carne, and offer a fantastic range of wine, beer, and spirits. They also do a fabulous cocktail menu, one of my favourites being the alcoholic Dr. Pepper – Amaretto, vodka, and Coca-Cola. Really yummy.
Food-wise, my favourite is their Brie and bacon burger, which is a posh twist on a normal burger. Definitely recommended.

Now, I know Ask is a chain restaurant but in my experience, the food is fantastic – as is the atmosphere.
Nearly every main meal on the menu is less than £10.00, be it pasta, pizza, or main – which is really good value.
One tip would be to book up as this branch can get fairly busy, especially around weekends. Also, make sure you try their desert ‘Chocolate Nemesis’, which just may be my favourite desert of all time.

This is a brilliant value fish & chips restaurant, serving salads, different types of battered fish, and chicken dishes, plus a lovely children’s menu, desert menu, and quite an extensive sides menu.
Considering this is a fish and chip shop, you wouldn’t expect the amount of choice that you get here, all for a really reasonable price.
They are also a family run business, which is something I always like to support rather than a chain. My personal recommendation would be their giant haddock – lovely flaky fish and crisp batter.

I love coming to this place for the wonderful home-made food, but also for the beautiful building. It is absolutely steeped in history and a really lovely place to eat.

If you like spicy food, this is an ideal restaurant for you.
Sangthai’s serves traditional Thai food, cooked in traditional ways. They have an Oriental garden with bamboo furniture and tropical plants, and a water feature. It is a very tranquil setting to eat in and the staff are fantastic, very warm and friendly.
The food itself is full of flavour and very reasonably priced. I particularly like their Gaeng Massaman Gai, which is a nutty, spicy, chicken curry. Well recommended.

Maxi’s has such a wide range of food, I don’t think you’ll ever run out of new things to try.
They offer the usual set menus, but these are quite expensive at around £22.00 a head. However, their main courses are only around £5-6, with rice for only £1.70.
I love Chinese food anyway, but here you get such a good choice combined with it being really quite cheap.
It also has the look of a traditional Chinese restaurant which makes your dining experience that much more authentic.

Although Café Rouge is a chain, they do some delicious food.
One particularly good deal they do is £10.50 for three courses, which are light and perfect. Sometimes after a three course meal you feel weighed down, but here they serve just the right portion sizes. This menu is served from 12-5, and during this time a main course only costs £6.50.
They are also very welcoming of children and provide colouring and activity table mats for them, which is a nice touch.
One of my favourites from here if you’re just popping into lunch is the mixed bread basket, which is lovely warm fresh bread, and butter. Very simple, but absolutely lovely to share and have a glass of wine over.

This is good quality local produce at its best. Melton’s serves seasonal food as well as always using local produce where possible.
The building was built in the 17th century and is beautiful, all oak beams, exposed brick walls and real wood floors. They have a snug and the overall atmosphere is very warm and comfortable. Melton’s is the sort of place you could sit in all evening very happily. Definitely worth a try.
They do a lunch service for £6.00 which includes homemade chips, and two courses for £12.50 from 7-9. One nice touch is that the locality of the produce is written on the menu, so you know exactly where your food has come from.

This is a corner Turkish restaurant on Shoreditch High Street that does an awesome value lunch deal for £6 – for this, you get a meal, bread, Turkish dips, a drink and even a lovely little square of Turkish delight!

Fantastic and cheap Chinese restaurant in Elephant and Castle, South London.

Without doubt the best Dim Sum I have had in London (served up to 4pm each day), all homemade and cooked to order. To top things off, really great prices.
